As seen on the TV show while fishing on WaveDancer Charters, these new jigs were developed by master snapper fishermen in Japan, and revolutionise the concept of lure fishing for snapper – and other species. The secret is in the “swinging” jig head, which slides up the line away from the hooks when a fish is hooked, eliminating the leverage effect of the lure against the hooks. The same concept as straylining with a sliding sinker.
“The Kaburas hooked twice as many snapper as the conventional inchuku-style jigs we used,” said Geoff. “It is by far and away the best lure I have ever seen for snapper. And it’s the easiest of any jig style to use; you simply drop it to the bottom and wind slowly. Simple as that. The fish follow it and nibble, and the key is to never strike. Just keep winding slowly until it loads up, and you are on. If the fish stops biting, just drop the lure back down and they hit it again. The hooks are small, but incredibly sharp and strong, and they always lip-hook the fish so it is easy to release.”
